- The scout should study his scout book to learn all the aspects of the requirement.
- The scout must be able to demonstrate that he met the requirement. Expect to be questioned.
- Scout leaders may delay the demonstration to insure the scout has retained the knowledge of the requirement, (i.e. Show me how to do a square knot tomorrow so I know you still know it. Scout leader may have the scout teach another scout how do a square knot to show proficiency).
- The scout is responsible to meet the requirement, not scout leaders, older scouts, parents or troop as a whole.
- The scout is expected to show his own initiative and responsibility in rank advancement.
- The scout is expected to make his own arrangements to sign off a requirement. Although leaders will ask how the scout is progressing, they are not responsible for his advancement. We sometimes have a sign off night, but do not count on these.
- Requirements are signed off in the scouts scout book. We sign off in the back of the book, not in the chapters. Bring your handbook to campouts and meetings. The scout is responsible for not loosing the book. It is a good idea to occasionally Xerox copy the sign offs. Make sure your name, address, phone number is written in the book.
- Some requirements such as Patrol Menu planning require that you plan, purchase and cook for your whole patrol on a campout. The scout must take the initiative and volunteer to do this at one one the camp outs.
- Any scout two ranks above the requirement can sign off the requirement. This is preferred over an adult sign off.
- Any adult scout leader - (committee member, scout master, adult on campout) can sign off the requirements. Scout parents can not sign off.
- Requirements (except the scout master conference and committee conference) can be signed off at any time. It does not need to be a campout or troop meeting. Call an older scout, go to his house, he will gladly work with you.
- For scout master and committee conferences the scout must be in full uniform - (Class A shirt and scarf)
- Rank is considered earned after all requirements are signed off and not at the court of honor. You can sew on the rank badge when all requirements are signed. However the troop will not provide a patch until the court of honor.
