Purchasing Camping Gear for Troop 283 Campouts
- Most campouts do not require a backpack, we use duffel bags.
- A simple Dacron sleeping bag from target works for summer and most campouts. A 0 to 20 degree bag is nice for late autumn or winter but 40 degree bag is nice for Many Point.
- Get a camping roll up mat with closed cell foam( so it is not a sponge.) You do not need a cot unless you are over age 30.
- The troop provides tents, but older scouts like their own. If you want a personal tent wait until your scout has gone camping for a while.
- Camping utilities is a simple plate, bowel, cup and silverware. You can take these right from your home kitchen. They need to be unbreakable ( no glass), easy to clean. Marked with your name. Your can get nicer sets later. The troop patrol equipment provides the cooking utensils. Do not bring paper plates and plastic picnic spoons and forks.
- Mark your scouts clothes with his name. We always have a full lost and found after camp outs. There are iron on laundry tags you can order from the internet.
- Do not wear your best cloths. Your nice school jacket will not come back clean.
- Remember rain gear. Don't go too expensive because the kids lose it or wreck it. A simple poncho is a good place to start. Get rain suits when your scout gets older. Don't go too cheap. They need to hold up.
- Good hiking boots are nice but the scout will out grow them before they are broken it. A good athletic shoe works fine for a weekend trip. Protect your feet, no open toe sandals. Save the hiking boots for philmont.
- Cotton, water and cold do not go together. For fall campouts look for wool and synthetics. If you use cotton socks bring extras to keep your feet dry. Nylon wind pants dry out fast.
- It gets cold at night, Bring a knit hat for at night, gloves for the day. An extra pair of dry socks to sleep with.
- Toiletries - go to target and get a small tooth brush and tooth paste. Save your hotel shampoo and soap. Put these in a small nylon bag. Add a small hand towel for weekends, large towel for Many Point.
- Our scout must have the toten chip card to bring a pocket knife
