Brule River Canoe and Kayak Trip
June 22 - 24, 2007
Scouts spent Friday and Saturday night camping at Amnicon Falls State Park (20 miles east of Superior, Wisconsin), June 22 - 24, 2007. During the day the scouts paddled their canoes down the Brule River. Some of the older scouts, high adventure scouts (13 yrs old & 1st Class), were able to use Kayaks on the Lower Brule River Sunday afternoon.
Brule River Canoe and Kayak Trip 2007
It took our troop about four hours to get to the Brule River Canoe area. When we got there we didn’t do a whole lot because some of us were getting tired so all we did was pitch up tents. In the morning we ate breakfast and got ready to get our canoes and start canoeing down the river. It was what at least felt like a slow start but we got our canoes and got in the water in a small amount of time. I canoed with our scout master Mr. Kellum and had a great time canoeing down the first 5-7 rapids there were before we ate lunch. We spent about 15 minutes waiting for other canoers to catch up. Then we ate lunch and some people did a little fishing but had unsuccessful time fishing. After lunch we continued on down the river for the rest of the 15 miles that we were going to canoe. There were a lot more rapids and it was a lot of fun. At the end of the day we got out of our canoes and put them on a trailer that took them back to the place that we had rented them from. We all got a good sleep that night and then in the morning our troop and some adults helped clean up the camp and bring down the tents. For me it was the best trip I’ve ever been on this year and I also highly recommend it. (Billy J.)
The small crew left for Amicon Falls State Park on Friday June 22 (about on time). The drive was very uneventful. All the vehicles arrived together. We split up the groups into camp sites and set our tents up before the sun went down.
Saturday arrived as a beautiful day for canoeing (warm not hot and with a light breeze). After a quick breakfast everyone loaded up and headed to the canoe rental place. We obtained our equipment dropped the
vehicles off at the final destination and headed for the drop off point. We had 9 canoes and 1 kayak. The canoeing was great. Canoes were running into shore and rocks but everyone was having a good time.
Kids were trading in and out of the kayak all day. After lunch a few canoeing crews were changed to even things out and then we headed down the rest of the river. At every stop the kids would float around on
the river waiting for the slower boats to get caught up. The final canoes made it to the landing by about 4 pm (after about 14 miles on the river).
After returning to the camp we had dinner. After dinner we headed to the falls that give Amicon Falls State Park its name. Many of the kids swam around both the upper and lower falls. At the upper falls you could swim in behind the falls. As darkness started to fall everyone had to return to camp. After the long day everyone went directly to bed instead of having a fire.
On Sunday we had breakfast and broke camp. 9 individuals headed back to the canoe retail place for a day of Kayaking. The rest of the people finished up cleaning up the camp sites and headed for home. The
9 individuals that went kayaking had another beautiful day to be on the water. The kayaking was a great time. We had a few people tip and others that took on so much water going down the river that we had to stop and drain the kayaks a number of times. Anyone old enough to do the kayaking should consider it in the future since it is a really good time (it is some work paddling but a good time). The Kayakers returned to the cities about 6 pm.
