High Adventure Scouts Attend Northwind Adventure 2008
The Perry Crew had a great time at Northwinds this year. Six people attended this year, even though we had room for a total of twelve people: Josh P., Jared W., Bill M., Will J., Scott J, and Mitch M. We did spend a lot of time walking in the snow. Our first walk was to our camp, the North Pole. At camp we hung a parachute from a tree. We stretched out the sides and attached its edges to the ground with logs and snow to make our sleeping shelter. All the scouts spent the afternoon building a Solar Dome. A Solar Dome is a snow shelter built by piling up snow inside a fabric shell. After the shell is filled with snow, the shell is removed. You then hollow out the inside of the snow pile. Billy and I slept overnight in the snow shelter. It was a lot of fun. It was very warm inside. However, when ever we moved, little bits of snow would fall on us and then melt. By morning our sleeping bags were very wet on the outside, but inside they were still dry.
We also walked though a swamp a few times. It was a difficult walk because the reeds and cattails would get tangled around our feet in the deep snow. Some of us were wearing snow shoes. On the clear part of the swamp we stopped and played a game. It was a lot of fun. It was a game of tag. I had no idea that my Dad could still run faster than me.
The temperture was near the freezing point. So it was hard to stay dry in our wool pants, especially when we were building the snow shelter. The food was simple and good. It was beef stew. Food seems to taste better when you are eating outside.
I would recommend that every scout attend Northwinds at least once. It is a great way to learn how to camp outside in the winter and have fun with your friends at the same time. (Will J.)
