Sea Base - Scuba Adventure 2008
(photos by Gary Christenson and Scott Janke)
It's 4 in morning on August 13th and 11 scouts with 4 adults prepare to leave Minnesota to Florida Keys. 15 people slowly venture to WCC to say
their goodbyes. At about 7:20 in the morning our flight takes off and about 3 and a half hours and one time zone later our plane lands in Miami.
Once we finally reached Florida Sea Base we checked in and had orientation. We had 9 dives scheduled for our week adventure. Plus one day to vist Key West. We went on 2 dives a day to amazing coral reefs. We saw sharks, turtles, sting rays, jellyfish, coral, queen angel fish, fish, eels,
lobsters, and lots of water! On Saturday night we went on our night dive with a venture crew that was also at sea base. For the night dive we were given a flash light and were told when to be back on the boat. The next morning we got the news that we had to evacuate sea base because of tropical storm Fay. All morning everyone was either packing are fortifying the camp for the attack. At about 2 a clock in the afternoon we were forced to evacuate Sea Base prematurely because of the threat of hurricane Fay. With our 11 passenger van and a car we set off to the Red Cross hurricane shelter at the Florida International University. Once there we put our gear inside and they put us to work. We first taped a tarp to the gym floor and then we helped the disabled into their beds on the second floor. We also carried their luggage upstairs. When everyone was settled into their beds the paramedics came to the gym and they played basketball with us, we won! The following night we hopped onto the airplane and headed home. (Weston B.)
