Scout Advancement

Scouts must take the initiative! Rank advancement and merit badges are as much about leadership and taking ownership as they are about completing the specific badge or rank advancement. The scouts must take the initiative to earn their rank by demonstrating an understanding of the requirements and the skills necessary to earn the specific rank.
The scouts must also take the initiative to contact the merit badge counselors to ask questions or the make the necessary arrangements to begin completing a merit badge. A list of the current merit badge counselors is available. Occasionally, a merit badge counselor will post a merit badge opportunity on the troops' calendar!

Leadership Policy Update Nov. 1, 20151) Effective Nov 1st 2015, all scouts in any Leadership Position, listed in the scout handbook as official positions of responsibility, must now have this leadership approved by the Scoutmaster.
Each Scout in such position must meet with the Scoutmaster and complete the leadership goal sheet with the Scoutmaster. When the term of leadership has ended the Scoutmaster will review the goal sheet and if the Scout has satisfactorily met the goals at the discretion of the Scoutmaster they will have completed the leadership requirement for the rank. This new requirement does not apply to any previously earned leadership requirements. 2) Any scout who is seeking an SPL or ASPL role at the next election in April, must have first served either a 4 month or 6 month term(depending on rank) as an Instructor at some point in their scouting history. For the remainder of the 2015-2016 election term, a scout may serve 4 months to complete this requirement. From April 25th 2016 forward, the 4-6 month requirement will be in effect. Below is a link to a set of Position Descriptions and Goals. These descriptions are a first pass for each position. As the first scouts work though this process with the Scoutmaster they will refine the description, adding and deleting as they see fit until they have it right for future scouts. Do not be alarmed by what you read in the descriptions, do be prepared to help shape the future leaders of Troop 283. ![]()
