Superior Hiking Trail Campout
A North Shore Backpack Adventure!

Here's a great opportunity for a weekend  15 mile backpack adventure on a section of the renown Lake Superior Hiking Trail.  3-4 adults needed and up to 8 scouts for maximum group size of 12.  Need to know by Sept 15. who from Lynx Patrol including ASM plans to go.  If we have room, I will open up to other troop scouts who meet participant requirements and sign up by Sept 19.  A those who sign up for this trip must attend a trip prep meeting that includes gear inventory that will be held in the troop room at WCC by Sept 24.

FRIDAY
  • Leave WCC by 3PM Friday, September 29; this will enable us to get to campsite by 8PM.
  • Stop for Dinner in Duluth 6 to 7 PM
  • Arrive at Fors Road trailhead parking lot: 8PM
  • Adults drop off car at Gooseberry Park (8 to 8:30) 
  • Other adults and scouts get ready for 30 minute hike to Silver Creek Campsite.
  • Adults shuttling vehicle return to trailhead to join group in hike into campsite 8:30
  • Everyone hikes into campsite together (8:30 to 9PM)
  • Set up camp and have campfire and review hiking plan for Saturday. (9 to 10)
  • Lights Out 10:30 PM

SATURDAY
  • Get up at 6:30, break camp, eat breakfast and get on trail by 8AM
  • Hike to Wolf Rock by noon and have 1 hour lunch break with great overlook. (6 miles)
  • Hike to choice of four campsites on Gooseberry River by 5 PM (6 miles)
  • Set up camp, eat dinner, clean up and prep for evening campfire by 7
  • Evening campfire with songs, stories, and sharing about hiking that day. (7 to 9 PM)
  • Lights out 10 PM

SUNDAY
  • Get up at 6:30, break camp, eat breakfast, brief church service and get on trail by 8AM
  • Arrive Gooseberry Visitor Center by 10AM (3 miles)
  • Adults go get other car while scouts and other adult leaders enjoy Visitor Center and Falls area (10 to 11)
  • Leave Gooseberry and stop at Rustic Inn in Castle Danger for Lunch
  • Drive to WCC (12:30 to 5PM)
  • Hang up tents/ tarps and put other troop gear away 
  • Scouts leave AFTER gear is put away ; should be by 5:30.


Costs for Trip
  • Bring money for dinner Friday and lunch Sunday (recommend $15-$20)
  • Camping meal cost: $25 per person.

Participant Requirements:
  1. Must be First Class Rank or higher
  2. Have at least 10 nights camping with troop.
  3.  Have taken at least one five mile hike
  4. At last one adult and scout must have wilderness first aid certification

Special gear requirements 
  1. Backpack 
  2. broken in hiking boots
  3. head lamp
  4. sleeping bag good for 20 F or lower
  5. sleeping pad or therma rest
  6. wool socks and sweater
  7. long underwear, preferably synthetic
  8. standard gear you would bring on any campout with hiking as focus
  9. detailed gear list and final trip plan will sent to those who register by Sept 19

Notes: 
  • Try not to bring any clothes with cotton; 
  • Best to bring clothes, socks made with wool or synthetics (e.g. under armor)  
  • Hint:  I have found good quality, low cost wool sweaters, hats and shirts and synthetic T-shirts and pants at Goodwill to use for backpacking and Boundary Waters.
  • Troop has five 80 L backpacks and two backpack tents that can used for this trip
  • Let me know if you have you have access to a backpack and backpack tent or would need to use a troop backpack or tent.
