About Troop 283!

TROOP 283- About us

Troop 283 was originally chartered as Troop 83 in November of 1915, just 5 years after W.D. Boyce incorporated the Boy Scouts of America, making the troop one of the oldest in the United States.  We are the longest continually chartered troop in Minnesota and we proudly call ourselves Minnesota’s oldest troop.

Girls Troop 5283 was founded in February 2019 as one of the first Girls Troops in the nation and we linked both Troops in April 2022 and have been operating as one Troop since then.

Troop 283 is a Scout Led Troop. Which means that the Scouts plan and execute all activities. Essentially each Patrol takes a month or two during the school year and plans the Troop Meetings and Campout within that month. We have found that this gives the Scouts amble opportunity to learn how to lead and follow-thru on projects. We have also found that the ideas the Scouts come up with are often more fun and engaging then the ones that the adults bring forth.

Our Troop is a place that helps foster all of our Scout’s journey’s. One of our Eagle coaches can help you become an Eagle Scout if that is your path. Our Instruction Program, led by higher ranked Scouts, will help you reach First Class Rank. We go on monthly camping trips, attend Many Point Scout Camp for two-weeks each summer, and visit BSA High Adventure bases on a 3-year rotation. Service projects are a regular part of our monthly calendar. We also offer merit badge opportunities within the Troop and promote external opportunities as well. If there is something that a Scout wants to do but we haven’t offered it yet, we’ll help them plan and execute the activity.

Our Chartered Organization is Wayzata Community Church, Wayzata MN and that is where our Troop Meetings are held.
